I loved this movie! Perhaps my expectations of French Movies is rather low; in general existentialism bores the bejesus of me. That's exactly why I love this parody of artsy movies: the heroes are in mad love with Jean Sol-Partre, as they call him, and the latter's spouting of philo-phenomenolgical sententious gobbygook is a treasure. Yes the special effects get tiresome but some of them are brilliant and sweet.

Even though film is a visual medium, many viewers still seem very attached to narrative. And often directors with a strong visual style (Wes Anderson, for example) are criticized for over designing their films, which is rather absurd. French director Michel Gondry, who started out making videos for Bjork and Daft Punk, is one of the most visually creative and whimsically surreal filmmakers working, but this doesn't seem to be enough for audiences. His latest, "Mood Indigo," made little impact when it was released in 2013, even though it's his most visually stunning film since "The Science of Sleep." Perhaps it will find a second life on DVD. On the surface it's a charming love story between Audrey "Amelie" Tautou (charming) and Romain Duris, but it's also a full throttle exercise in lo-fi fx and flights of fancy. Even if it's not perfectly plotted, the acting is great and there is always something interesting to look at. The title comes from a Duke Ellington song, but it's based on a book by Boris Vian called "Froth on the Daydream." This 2-disc set includes both a theatrical and an extended cut.

The edgy, surreal writing of Boris Vian is occasionally suggested here, while at other times director Gondry gets self indulgent in his cutesy effects. The performance of the "cook" by Omar Sy is marvelous. His fluid, easy motion and beacon smile enliven the film. Don't expect a happy ending, Vian isn't a happy writer.

The random visual creativity overwhelmed the story to the point where we stopped watching after 15 minutes. Surreal, but not nice, dramatically speaking.

OK, but disappointing. Quirky and sad.
