"Up in the garden, the world is full of green--leaves and sprouts, growing vegetables, ripening fruit. But down in the dirt there is a busy world of earthworms digging, snakes hunting, skunks burrowing, and all the other animals that make a garden their home. I love the illustrations by Christopher Silas Neal in this precious book about a young girl helping her Nana with all the seasonal chores in the garden. Lovely book for a quiet story time.

Gardening season is fast upon us. What I loved most about this picture book is the way it shows the interconnections between all of creation: from the plants, bees, and birds to the pillbugs, earthworms, and skunks and how all have their role to play. It would also be a good way to help educate little ones (and adults!) who are a little squeamish about insects, spiders, and snakes in their yards.

Good book to read to a toddler because of all the plants, animals , and bugs to look at!

Hipster illustrations and above average gardening vocabulary make this a special lap-sit book. Neat glossary at the end!
Check out Over and Under the Snow as well, another gorgeous creation by this author/illustrator team. THEN check out Over and Under the Pond.
