Opinion

From Library Staff

I love the humor of the book titles, how Lyric has the right books at the right moment for her "patrons," not to mention that she's a hip librarian with purple hair and cool boots. The illustrator is Vera Brosgol, local artist and author of her own books as well, who dedicates the book ... Read More »

This book is kind of short but I like it!!!

Very funny with plenty of rhyming. My 5 year old loved it. It might be hard to do in a large group because of some of the small frames and details, but great for a one on one read aloud.

I love this book, but will elementary readers enjoy it? I think the graphic novel style will appeal, and students will understand the irony of the henchmen gaining their voices after reading books. I also think this could work at the beginning of the school year as we talk about reading habits and purposes for reading.

A note on racial and gender representation: I thought it was interesting that all the bad guys were white men, but that the super hero crew had a mix of races and genders. I do wish that the cover featured the super heroes, not the bad guys. Lyric McKerrigan, as a female librarian followed stereotypes, but casting her as a superhero disrupted the stereotype.

I might be biased as a librarian but this book really cracked me up! It has humour, intrigue, a villain and a hero, all while subtly showing readers how books can help people every step of the way!

When i read this one out loud,
A) the villain is read like angry squidward,

B) the plumber disguise providing employee rights advice is read like Tigger from Whinnie the Pooh

Filled with fantastic illustrations, a wonderful sense of humor, and a fun rhythmic back and forth in the book's comic book-style narration, this is a wonderful book for any fan of the library, superheroes, or spies. Through cunning, caring, and some quick readers' advisory, Lyric McKerigan foils every facet of the evil Doctor Glockenspiel's plan. From empowering his goons with knowledge on unions and workers' rights to freeing the captive secret agents with a book on lock-picking, Lyric McKerigan has a book for every problem.

This book is lighthearted, fun, and made me smile the entire time I was reading it! I love the line on the front cover that says "Saving the world with the right book at the right time!". It reminds me of what I say about being a librarian which is "I'm saving the world, one information need at a time!" :)
