An adventure story told from the point of view of the ship's cat, Jacob Tibbs. This is not a story where animals behave like humans, but rather, a story of a ship set to sea and the complications and misfortune that befall the captain and crew along the way, related to us through the smallest crew member, Jacob. Jacob is a tiny kitten when the Melissa Rae sets sail to trade, but he must grow up quickly and learn the hardest of life lessons. Although we encounter various hardships along the way, the story concludes with a satisfying and upbeat ending.

Cat lovers rejoice! A kitten named Jacob Tibbs, son of a highly respected ship’s cat, sets sail onboard the Melissa Rae with the esteemed Captain Natick in charge. While the seas look calm, Jacob’s mother Mrs Tibbs knows there is trouble brewing and soon a storm approaches bringing tragedy with it and a wholly unexpected fate for Jacob follows close behind. Misery! Mutiny! Castaways! Almost certain doom! This book has it all, and fans of adventurous animal stories will be cheering for this young feline hero of the high seas and hoping a sequel is not too far beyond the horizon.

A nice adventure book for middle-school children. Though I felt the pacing was a bit slow, I feel this was mainly because the author made sure to use lots of descriptive language to paint a great image of scenes, characters and events. It would make a great bedtime story for kids.
I also want to note that I felt the title was a bit misleading, as I picked up the book thinking it would go through the nine lives of the titular cat. That wasn't the case however, it's all just one adventure.
Still an entertaining adventure that I think kids might enjoy!

Survival on the high seas in the 1870s! As a young kitten, Jacob gains his sea legs while enduring a terrible storm, chaos on his ship, a deserted island and treachery. A somewhat formal writing style lends itself best to reading aloud.

i really think the best part is the very end and the start is a bit confusing
