This is a brilliant series. While it is indeed not a "documentary" on France under occupation it strives (successfully) to present the situation with accuracy and honesty. Hence the bad behavior of the Resistance towards the end (which is not worse than their opponents; Marchetti's killing of Marie Germain and the German SS commander's behavior at the end is certainly the worst all along.

The second World War (and indeed all wars since the Civil War) was different in America from the other involved countries. It never involved what we now unfortunately (thanks, W.!) call the "Homeland". All other countries took heavy civilin losses and massive destruction along with the battlefield casualties. France is just one example. I recommend in this context also a German series (Generation War; Unsere Väter, Unsere Mütter). Almost as good as the French Village.

I am very hooked on this Series. I've watched seasons 1 & 2 and asked the library to order the rest of the seasons. There are apparently seven with the last just airing in 2016 or 2017

Riveting from the get go. So glad I could binge watch because I would never have been happy to wait to find out what happens next. So much food for thought and it left me wondering about how different people react when confronted with horrendous situations and decisions.

This is not meant to be a documentary of occupied France. In places it was a little like a soap opera, but I enjoyed keeping track of who was sleeping with whom. Each episode ended with a cliffhanger to be resolved. I study a lot of WWII history. This a very entertaining, intricate story that illustrates a bitter period of time for France without simply being a series of facts. It focuses on a number of characters both French citizens / resistance, German soldiers, Nazi SS / SD, and French collaborators. There are 5 sets of 12 episodes, one for each year of the German occupation of France, 1940-1944. The series is in French with subtitles. I became very engrossed in several characters, both good and evil, and really wanted to know their fates. Not really a spoiler, but one of my favorite characters is killed. Several other individuals sort of disappear into an unknown future and several strong story lines were simply dropped. ****** SPOILER ALERT *** I did not like that the French resistance forces were portrayed as worse than the Germans in many cases in the last episodes. There were, I am certain, abuses by the resistance toward Germans and collaborators after liberation, but to have abusive Frenchmen be the "stars" of the last episodes was very disappointing to me. I still recommend the series even though I enjoyed only 56 of the 60 episodes. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Don't be put off by the 1st episode - I almost returned it! Other reviews are right on so I won't elaborate on those lines...only want to add...the characters, story and acting are fantabulous! LOVE! At this writing, 2 days overdue but I can't stop watching now - no way!!!

A remarkably fresh look at WWII that aired in 2009. I found Season 1 to be instantly engaging, and I immediately fell in love with several characters. Strong acting, beautiful cinematography, great story telling.
It chronicles the lives of villagers ialong the demarcation line in German-occupied France. Love it!
Looking forward to Season 2.
