A novel set in Japan's Sengoku era. Thanks to an imperial mining permit, the Mishima clan has grown rich from silver mines -- but local rivals exterminate the clan, leaving only the heir Seijūro, who escapes to the capital. There he trains in swordsmanship, plans for his clan's revival and begins to get involved in shipping and trade, showing some talent as a merchant. He soon fixates on the power of firearms and masters their manufacture, use and strategy while restraining the circulation of the necessary raw materials. Crossing paths with the 13th Ashikaga shōgun Yoshiteru, Mori Motonari, and a young Oda Nobunaga, he grows as a military commander, overcoming deadly perils time and time again to move closer to his dream.
