1994. In the desert near Tillman, Arizona, forty miles from Tucson, a grand experiment involving the future of humanity is underway. As climate change threatens the earth, eight scientists, four men and four women dubbed the "Terranauts," have been selected to live under glass in E2, a prototype of a possible off-earth colony. Closely monitored by an all-seeing Mission Control, this New Eden is both an adventure in scientific discovery and a momentous publicity stunt. The Terranauts face increased scrutiny and a host of disasters, both natural and of their own making.
Sealed inside a glass enclosure designed as a prototype for a possible off-Earth colony, eight Terranauts in the 1990s Arizona desert test their skills in five biome environments that they must protect from skeptics who would sabotage the mission.

good read, the book is heavy and looks big but is a breeze. I laughed and it lasted just long enough. Took a week to read. It helped me to take notes on the acronyms used, and everybody's name, sobriquet, and job title for the mission.

Boyle is pessimistic and cynical about the human race - but I can never put one of his books down and I wind up thinking of them long after.

I listened to the CD version of this book during my daily commute; as a person with a background in science, I found it intriguing to think about just how "human" the closed environment system was. I liked the way the story unfolded through the voices of three individuals, like strands of yarn unwinding from the skein.

T.C. Boyle is one of my favorite authors. He knows how to capture the human condition. In this go round, the human condition turns into a soap opera. I wont retell the plot here but there was a ton of material to work with. Eight people locked up together in a biosphere for 2 years. Most of the "science gone wrong" material was wasted. There are a few major problems that arise but they were in the background of all the human drama. Some interesting drama but most of it petty. These are scientists but wow, they were pretty messed up.

Good but too melodramatic. I don't enjoy soap operas.

Fresh air in deed.
"Narrative" agreed.
