"Maybe. But do you know what I think? I think deep down, we're afraid that things could get better. Afraid to find out that all the evil - all the suffering we ignore - could have been prevented. If only we had cared enough to try." - Tarisai

Comment
Add a CommentInspired by West-African folklore, Raybearer follows brave, intelligent, and deadly Tarisai as she fights against a cursed fate and discovers the leader she's meant to become. This outstanding debut features some of the best world-building I've ever read and left me wanting more. Jordan Ifueko is a new favorite author and I can't wait for the sequel!
Fans of teen fantasy set in African settings (like Children of Blood and Bone) will likely enjoy this novel that kicks off a series.
I rarely find books that I'd read a second time, but I think this one just made the list. I read this book in two and a half days because I could barely put it down. This is one of the 2021-2022 Georgia Peach Book Award books. This story is so full and rich! If I had to compare it to anything, it was like savoring my number one favorite dessert from a restaurant that discontinued it then brought it back years later. Tarisai has such a complicated family relationship growing up and her journey through her path in life is so hard to pull away from. I really hope Jordan writes more books because if they're anything like this one, I just found a new favorite author.
An engrossing and beautiful debut fantasy novel! The writing style is sparse yet lush at the same time. The characters came to life on the page and developed well. Overall a great read.
My favorite YA read of the year! As a librarian, sometimes you get Advanced Readers Copies of books, and I was lucky enough to get a copy of this one from Netgalley.
A beautifully diverse West-African inspired fantasy, Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko is enthralling with great world building and fascinating characters. I highly recommend this one for young adult readers and readers who are Young Adult at heart <3
Loved the fantasy world and the strength, intelligence & integrity of the main character, a dark-skinned girl named Tarisai. Caught between a love for both her mother and the Crown Prince, Tarisai must figure out a way to defy the path laid before her and determine her own future.
