FAT CITY is like a Charles Bukowski novel, except that John Huston made the film long before Bukowski's tales of drinking, fighting and odd-jobbing became chic. This is an understated, gorgeous movie with flawless performances by the principals -- Stacy Keach, Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell. Man-woman relations are expertly dissected here. Oh, what a brutal race to the bottom it is. Make it to the end though. Incandescence awaits you.

The gritty "Fat City" benefits from being shot on location on skid row in Stockton bringing the film the authentic flavor that might not have occurred before the 70's. The film which achieved critical acclaim, two Oscar nominations (including one for cinematographer Conrad L. Hall) bringing Huston from the shadow of a "has been" to an artist that still had much to say and Huston proved that he still had quite a bit to contrite making "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean", "The Man a Who Would Be King", "Wise Blood" , and "Under The Volcano".
There are terrific performances in just about every role but especially from Bridges, and Stacy Keach (who should have been nominated for an Oscar), Candy Clark and Susan Tyrell who fleshes out and brings life and compassion to the role of the female bar fly Oma. It's a pity her career didn't soar the way it should have afterwards.
