NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNo one speaks the language of suspense more brilliantly than Kathy Reichs, author of the acclaimed Temperance Brennan series. In Speaking in Bones, the forensic anthropologist finds herself drawn into a world of dark secrets and dangerous beliefs, where good and evil blur. Professionally, Temperance Brennan knows exactly what to do--test, analyze, identify. Her personal life is another story. She's at a loss, wondering how to answer police detective Andrew Ryan's marriage proposal. But the matter of matrimony takes a backseat when murder rears its head. Hazel "Lucky" Strike--a strident amateur detective who mines the Internet for cold cases--comes to Brennan with a tape recording of an unknown girl being held prisoner and terrorized. Strike is convinced the voice is that of eighteen-year-old Cora Teague, who went missing more than three years earlier. Strike is also certain that the teenager's remains are gathering dust in Temperance Brennan's lab. Brennan has doubts about working with a self-styled websleuth. But when the evidence seems to add up, Brennan's next stop is the treacherous backwoods where the chilling recording (and maybe Cora Teague's bones) were discovered. Her forensic field trip only turns up more disturbing questions--along with gruesome proof of more untimely deaths. While local legends of eerie nocturnal phenomena and sinister satanic cults abound, it's a zealous and secretive religious sect that has Brennan spooked and struggling to separate the saints from the sinners. But there's nothing, including fire and brimstone, that can distract her from digging up the truth and taking down a killer--even as Brennan finds herself in a place where angels fear to tread, devils demand their due, and she may be damned no matter what.Praise for Speaking in Bones "Speaking in Bones keeps the suspense high."--Associated Press "Temperance's forensic sleuthing uncovers many secrets, along with a blockbuster psychological surprise."--The Huffington PostFrom the Hardcover edition.

A pleasant read but lacked excitement.

Kathy Reichs manages to keep her stories fresh and interesting when it comes to the murder investigations. And the changing relationship between Tempe and her mother adds depth but her relationship with Andy and her response to his proposal is plain frustrating. Because she can't or won't decide, looks like he's decided for her.

Kathy Reichs never disappoints. Interesting plot lines dealing with main character Temperance Brennan and her work as a forensic anthropologist. The relationship between Ryan and Tempe heats up and the storyline is as interesting as always.

If you like Kathy Reichs, you will like this one, but of course there is lots of gore, so I would rate it R.

I normally love Temperance Brennan stories but I really disliked this one. I realize that Tempe's stance is very logical and scientific yet this book was based on a faith-related conflict. As a result, it came across as though all faith is baseless, meaningless, and damaging to "real" progress. I agree that fanatics and extremists in any religion cause major damage - to relationships, people, and property. But the vast majority of religious people are not extremists. Yet the book conveyed the image that ANY religion (no matter how moderate) was harmful and caused people to behave in inappropriate ways, instead of considering that religious extremists often use "god" to justify dangerous behaviours.

Furthermore, a major plotline in the book is Tempe's reluctance to accept Ryan's marriage proposal. This drove me crazy because she wants to be her own woman without having men come to her rescue. Honestly? If she's going to say that, she's going to have to stop taking idiotic chances that put her in exactly that situation! Besides, when she needs rescuing, anyone could do it. It really has nothing to do with Ryan in particular coming to her rescue. He's just the one keeping tabs on her and following up when she (for instance) doesn't answer her cell phone...

This was as usual, a good read. Not so much filler in it which is enhancing. This one involved a websleuth & a few members of a church that doesn't allow much room for movement. Ryan is back in Tempes life but she doesn't think he shows her respect for her abilities to take care of herself by rescuing her all the time. Tempe might have to have an honesty session with herself as soon as possible. I've been with her from the beginning & if it wasn't for Ryan & or other men in her life there would only be one book written about her. It's not like Tempe thinks to not put herself into those situations that force people to be put in the position of either rescuing her or letting her die. Let's at least tell it like it is. These are still very good reads & I'm not putting her down- it's just the way it is.

You always have a good read with Kathy Reichs but I'm wondering how many times Temperance Brennan can go head on into dangerous situations and always come out with minor cuts and bruises.
