Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her rascally lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo. Eluding Evelyn's former lover, who wants her back, and Evelyn's cousin Lord Ellesmere, who wishes to marry her, the two women sail up the Nile to an archaeological site that is home to a rather lively mummy. Soon strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

This entire series of "Amelia Peabody books" is great! Strong, fascinating characters, with much detail about archaeology and British politics of the late 19th and early 20th century. The author (Barbara Mertz with pen name Elizabeth Peters) has a PhD in Egyptology and is the author of several popular series of fiction. The main characters in this series are fictional, the activities of the characters are "larger than life" in many instances, which makes them quite entertaining, but within a historical context that is quite true to life. See the book "Amelia Peabody's Egypt: A Compendium" for details on that context. (I enjoyed this series as hardback books.)

I like Amelia Peabody; she's a sassy, stubborn, and strong woman. She and her husband are Egyptologists in the late 1800s and have a knack for getting into sticky situations and Amelia always fancies solving the mystery! This is a fun and clean mystery series for anyone looking for something a little different.

The first of Amelia Peabody's many archaeological adventures in Egypt.

An excellent debut novel for a mystery series set in Egypt. The feisty, Victorian-era British heroine is a refreshing change, and the historical details add to the plot.

Love all the Amelia Peabody mysteries and everything else she wrote. Sadly Elizabeth Peters has passed. She is missed.

the language is a little too flowery and too descriptive for me and the mystery isn't very mysterious, but good insights into egypt

I have read other Amelia Peabody books, which I liked. This is the first in the series and my first download. I liked the voice of Barbara Rosenblat who makes the characters unique. I took notes to remember the story plot between bookmarks. A good read.

If you enjoy proper English ladies, Egyptology, mysteries and daring deeds then this book is for you! It follows Amelia Peabody, a no-nonsense spinster with a passion for archaeology. On the way to Egypt she picks up a sidekick, the romantic and youthful Evelyn, and falls in step with a pair of archaeology-minded brothers. Soon strange events unfold around the excavation site and it's up the the quartet to unravel it all.
