Introduction by China MiévilleLong acknowledged as a master of nightmarish visions, H. P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition's uncanny discoveries--and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization--is a milestone of macabre literature. One of my all-time favorite authors in HP Lovecraft. In fact some of his work is so frightening, I can't even be alone in a room when reading him. (Gayle's pick)

Interesting tale of terror in the backdrop of the Antarctic as an expedition discovers chilling evidence of unknown life forms. Can still be chilling for those have a good sense of thinking and imagination versus those that need every detail to be described to affect scariness.

One of Lovecraft's best stories.

Lovecraft has an older style of writing and embraces the use of long words and long descriptions. Similar to Poe in some ways except a bit more obscure.

Stories that have not aged particularly well. Very tame by horror standards of today or even in the last 30 years. I kept waiting for the terror moment which never came. At best, can be considered background reading for budding auteurs of the genre.
