Gillengaria seethes with unrest. In the south, hostility toward magic and its users has risen to a dangerous level, though King Baryn has ordered that such mystics are to be tolerated. It is whispered that he issued the decree because his new wife used her magic powers to ensnare him... The King knows there are those in the noble Twelve Houses who could use this growing dissent to overthrow him. So he dispatches the mystic Senneth to assess the threat throughout the realm. Accompanying her is a motley band of magic-users and warriors including Tayse, first among the King's Riders—who holds a hard view of mystics in general, and Senneth in particular. But as the unlikely allies venture farther into the south, they will face death in a land under the sway of a fanatical cult that would purge Gillengaria of all magic users. And they will come to realize that their only hope of survival lies in standing together...

I find the entire series quite wonderful. Sharon knows her craft well. The characters are richly developed and the story is both interesting and surprising at times. These are the types of books I don't want to put down.... and anxiously wait for the next. Definitely a 5 star read.

I've read several of Sharon Shinn's books and found them largely enjoyable. This new world with mystics is interesting. However, while I enjoyed the journey through the land, and the unearthing of the nobles' plotting, I found that once again Shinn creates a romance that felt unnecessary to the story.

An exceptional fantasy. A heartfelt story of love and fellowship amid storm clouds of violence and ambition.
Shinn infuses her tale with strong emotions, more so than other authors in this genre.

I've read Mystic and Rider twice. ALL the rest of the series once. I loved them all, I continue to look and hope there will be another to this series.

I've read about half the series so far and I'm loving it. It's fantasy and adventure with a dab of romance. The world of Gillengaria is richly drawn and the characters utterly believable. Order of the series: Mystic and Rider ; The Thirteenth House ; Dark Moon Defender ; Rider and Raelynx ; Fortune and Fate.

This was a wonderful find. The first in a series about a land full of magic and wonders. Adventures around a core group of friends as they travel the land.
