Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Whether it's to go to school or on a date, people don't venture out of their home. There's really no need. For the most part, Maddie's okay with the solitary, digital life—until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren't meant to be alone, he tells her. Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her—a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. But with society and her parents telling her otherwise, Maddie is going to have to learn to stand up for herself if she wants to change the path her life is taking. In this not-so-brave new world, two young people struggle to carve out their own space.

"Some people try to tell you the things you want in life are out of your grasp, while others lift you up on their shoulders and help you reach them. I may not know a lot, but I prefer to fill my life with people who let me climb on their shoulders, not people who try to keep me planted on the ground."

I shook my head. "I'm not that girl anymore. I've grown up and I learned from that experience."
... "You are that girl, Maddie. You're just getting it beat out of you."

“People are becoming spectators of their own lives instead of living them. But the best part is getting in the game. That’s when it’s all worth it.”

“I used to think talking was all about words. But you can say so much more with your eyes and your fingers and your touch. Words just make us one-dimensional.”

“It’s not convenience that bothers me, it’s people’s obsession with saving time. Everything’s a race. I just don’t get who or what we’re constantly racing against.”

“Life should be a risk. It’s more than a straight line that you can see clearly from one point to the other. It dips and curves and you never know what’s around the bend sometimes until you get there. That scares a lot of people. But that’s the beauty of it.”

"Your movements become rigid and unsure because behind all the fancy gadgets and all that digital armor, you realize you're just flesh and bones.”

Second best sci-fi book I've read in the last 5 years. So timely and so chilling. Written for 13-18 year old girls, this book should also appeal to boys. I think it is essential reading for all mothers and grandmothers, too. What will happen in the US if school shooting do not stop? How much more freedom to go to public spaces can we lose before we say enough. How many more of our citizenship rights are we willing to give up to protect our children? Please read!

Love the whole premise of this story. Maddie and Justin's unfolding love story is an engaging one. The themes addressed are fantastic for young adult readers.

i liked the overall plot, but the ending seemed too abrupt and not quite satisfactory in the relationship between maddie and justin and maddie's future and her family..

I love the main message of the story, but I really wanted to read more about the new world. I felt like it was focused more on justin's and maddie's relationship (which i dont object to really but...) and not enough information on this "different" world that kacvinsky has created. I wanted to know what else they did in terms of technology and it didn't really show that. and some parts (like the flying car) was unrealistic, and felt like the author just randomly decided to stick it in the story because it's the future so why not? it doesn't fit with the theme though. other than that, it was still an okay read, and the maddie's voice was pretty refreshing and wasn't needy or whiny or anything.

I absolutely loved awaken..it was a story about how much technology really runs our lives..what also makes it better is that it's also a love story about a girl who is trapped in her technological life and the boy who helps bring her out of it and opens her eyes and heart to things she's never seen before. It was a very good read!

Maddie lives in a virtual world in the year 2060 with nearly no physical contact. Her dad is the creator of Digital School, DS and ever since Maddie hacked into his computer and sent his files to the rebels 2 and a half years ago, she's been in total confinement. Lately though, she has been chatting with Justin, an online tutor and when he asks to meet her in a real life, physical study group she hesitantly agrees. The domino effect from that meeting is instant. She meets Justin and his friends, who strongly oppose DS and wants people to have a choice, real school or DS. Maddie feels torn, she cannot betray her family again, but she too longs for the physical connection that is missing with DS, but she can't shake the feeling that she is being used by Justin and his friends. Not to mention her intense attraction to Justin and the constant walls he puts up. Who will Maddie choose; her family that she betrayed once before, or Justin? The struggle is fierce, dynamic and ever changing. And what about Justin, the constant wonderer who never stays in one place, how can he turn away from the only person he has ever loved? How can he choose between his mission and Maddie?
