On their way to start a new life, Tula and her family travel on the Prairie Rose, a colony ship headed to a planet in the outer reaches of the galaxy. All is going well until the ship makes a stop at a remote space station, the Yertina Feray, and the colonist's leader, Brother Blue, beats Tula within an inch of her life. An alien, Heckleck, saves her and teaches her the ways of life on the space station. When three humans crash land onto the station, Tula's desire for escape becomes irresistible, and her desire for companionship becomes unavoidable. But just as Tula begins to concoct a plan to get off the space station and kill Brother Blue, everything goes awry, and suddenly romance is the farthest thing from her mind.

A light YA story that's out of this world (haha!). The whole entire book takes place on a space station and it is fascinating to see the interactions that take place on that station between the strong female protagonist Tula Bane and aliens that reside there. The personal development and social struggles in this story are thought-provoking because it brings up the subject of what might be the relationship between humans and aliens as well as the relationship between humans themselves.

This is a strange book in some ways, but I loved it. The isolation of a space station, the potential weirdness of being separated from other humans for so long you forget how humans just ARE, wonderful friendships, and vaguely evil imperial governments were some of my favorite parts of this story about a girl stranded on a space station, the only human among aliens. This is a beautiful story, with a quietness and a pace that emphasizes the slow shift of time throughout the book.
