I basically read this book so I could finish the series. I wasn't particularly interested in this couple (Why can't dead people stay dead?) and theirs was a relationship that might be borderline lust/crush that didn't convince me. The mystery and identity of the traitor was a bust as well. And that secondary H/h was unnecessary.

Beatrice Corning, niece of the Earl of Blanchard, has always been fascinated by the portrait of the deceased Reynaud St. Aubyn, original heir to the title which her uncle now holds. But she is utterly shocked when Reynaud stumbles into a political tea she's hosting. Reynaud, who was believed to have been killed by Indians seven years ago, has finally returned to his home and is determinedly focused on regaining his title, lands, and monies. At the same time, Reynaud is drawn to Beatrice. However, deadly threats from the traitor that caused Reynaud to be captured back in the Colonies, could separate the couple permanently.

The final in a series, Hoyt creates another compelling historical romance while also resolving the overarching mystery present in all four books. Her characters are once again flawed, Reynaud in particular having to deal with his past. Sadly, I didn't find the fairy tale that frames the narrative to be as compelling as the main story itself although it was a wonderful idea. A nice conclusion to the series that brings together all of the heroes and heroines from each of the books.
