The thrilling adventure of Lady Trent continues in Marie Brennan's Voyage of the Basilisk . . . Devoted readers of Lady Trent's earlier memoirs, A Natural History of Dragons and The Tropic of Serpents, may believe themselves already acquainted with the particulars of her historic voyage aboard the Royal Survey Ship Basilisk, but the true story of that illuminating, harrowing, and scandalous journey has never been revealed—until now. Six years after her perilous exploits in Eriga, Isabella embarks on her most ambitious expedition yet: a two-year trip around the world to study all manner of dragons in every place they might be found. From feathered serpents sunning themselves in the ruins of a fallen civilization to the mighty sea serpents of the tropics, these creatures are a source of both endless fascination and frequent peril. Accompanying her is not only her young son, Jake, but a chivalrous foreign archaeologist whose interests converge with Isabella's in ways both professional and personal.Science is, of course, the primary objective of the voyage, but Isabella's life is rarely so simple. She must cope with storms, shipwrecks, intrigue, and warfare, even as she makes a discovery that offers a revolutionary new insight into the ancient history of dragons. The Lady Trent Memoirs1. This book kind of felt like a place holder between the books before and after this one. This one individually I didn't find all that exciting, and if nothing else I read these books for the mad-cap adventures.

I just love this series! Isabella is as awesome as always and sails around the world, researching dragons. There are a lot of new places in this book, as well as some interesting new characters. The ending is very mysterious and I was sad when I finished the book, because I know I'm going to have to wait forever till the next one. These books would be interesting to anyone who is interested in the Victorian era, fantastical beasts, politics, archaeology, biology, or anthropology.

A worthy follow up to the first two books of Lady Trent's natural history of dragons. Also, you've got to love a book printed in blue ink!

In the third instalment of her memoirs, the Lady Trent sets out on a voyage to see the scope of dragons across the globe. As usual though, her plans don't go quite as expected, getting expelled from one country, and ending up stranded on an island. These seemingly unfortuitous events actually lead to some brilliant discoveries which will shape the course of her research henceforth. Joining her this time is her son Jake, his governess, and Tom Wilker. But along the way she makes some acquaintances, in particular Suhail, an educated man who also has a passion for fieldwork. His study of Draconian ruins partially intersects with the Lady Trent's own interests, so they get along quite well. Adventure, trouble, and scandal follow in her wake, but she must work harder than ever, for others have now started to kill dragons for their bones, and it is about to change the world. As her world continues to expand, so too does the complexity. The wordbuilding becomes more magnificent with each book, expanding on our knowledge of the species of dragons, cultures, and politics. The scientific approach to the study of dragons continues to have sound footing, and even makes ties to our own world by definitively and amusingly proving that komodo dragons are not actual dragons. For its characters, and its unique approach to dragons, this is a series that fantasy lovers must try.
