In my view this is definitely a YA, not Adult, speculative fiction. I am not a fan of westerns and this is predominately of that genre. I would recommend it to a younger readership and those who have no objections to wild west settings sprinkled with many "hell's fire", "ain't's" and the like. In this respect it is reminiscent of Mark Twain in the use of dialect. It is also didactic and not subtle in its support of diversity. Even though I agree with the author's views in this matter, she annoyed me with her heavy-handed approach. The final battle with the monster should have been longer and more intense; it is given short shrift after such a long build-up. I am giving it 3 stars - for the right reader, it will be enjoyable and they will want to find out how Nettie's journey continues in book 2.

A decent story, but it's the characters that really shine here. The protagonist and most of the supporting cast are really interesting, if not always likeable.

I'm not sure what prompted this to be classed under adult fiction rather than YA, but I'd recommend it for either audience.

A steely-willed heroine living in a world of hidden monsters and burdened by a harsh life and a harsher destiny.
Full of heart, action and often wacky dark humour.

The originality of the story and the compelling heroine makes this one of my favorites recent reads. The setting is in an alternate reality 1870s Texas/Mexico borderlands (in the book called Azteca). The story of the young woman involves many complex themes such as gender identity, racism, sexism and spirituality but all of it is blended into an amazing story that is both profound and hilarious. I can't recommend it enough.
