"Ally realizes Mr. Right may be all wrong and finds a new love. Ling's ex shows up and leaves her -- and Fish -- bewildered. And budding rock star Cage takes the stage in another spectacular season that includes Marcia Cross, Sting and Anne Heche. It's a winner in any court."--Container.

Hello, Larry. This fourth season of ALLY MCBEAL is marked with a new cast member, Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. He plays a lawyer that truly, madly deeply falls in love with Ally, and she with him, but he comes with his own complications that force Ally to reexamine her views on love. A great deal of struggle plagues this season, with too much sorrow destabilizing these characters. For example, Ling watches on wistfully as her ex-fiance, a man still in love with her, gets married to her friend. Ling is normally confident and on the warpath; seeing her vulnerable and melancholy threw me for a loop. However, there are some lighter moments. John gets back in the dating pool, entering into not one but two new relationships. Nell goes to church. Fish becomes a Hollywood man, getting entangled in the trials and tribulations of Tinsel Town. And Elaine twists again like she did last summer. A lot has changed from last season to this and I'm not a hundred percent convinced that I like where it's going. Renee is delegated to the background, for one, and Georgia is all but gone completely from the show. So much screen time is devoted to Larry that we lose glimpses of the characters we already loved. Still, I liked the bittersweet note it ended on. It was also a bit of a time warp to see young Josh Groban doing his thing as a client at the firm. Needless to say, I’ve come this far, so I’m going to finish the whole quirky ALLY series, warts and all.

refreshing to have robert downey jr. on the show (so easy on the eyes!), too bad he didn't last. this season was definitely more about drama than comedy but it still had its moments. season 2 is still my favorite, we'll see if my opinion changes once season 5 is completed. till then....

“You think wanting a family makes you a lesser person? You know, not that you've ever made a habit of accepting any wisdom from me, Ally, but … family's everything. It's where the strong live, and it's where they love.”
