"What's my stance on 9/11? Oh, um anti. It was a tragedy. I mean, we lost 19 of our best guys. . .That was a joke."
Even if you haven't seen the movie, you probably know the story. Comedian/actor Kumail Nanjiani met his future wife Emily V. Gordon, they began dating, and then she was diagnosed with a rare condition that led to her being put in a medically induced coma. "The Big Sick" is a fictionalized account of their relationship, with Nanjiani playing himself and Zoe Kazan (the granddaughter of director Elia Kaza) as Emily. Nanjiani and Gordon wrote the script, Judd Apatow produced, and Michael Showalter directed. It's a different kind of romantic comedy, one that deals with a life threatening illness and with cultural differences and expectations. Nanjiani mines a lot of humor from his religious Pakistani families' hopes that he marry a nice Pakistani girl and become a lawyer and a lot of humor from his awkward interactions with Gordon's parents, beautifully played by Holly Hunter and, in a surprisingly great performance, Ray Romano. The movie itself is too long, somewhat badly paced (It's front loaded with humor.), and indifferently directed (Unsurprising for an Apatow production.), but it's very funny in parts, moving, charming, and more substantial than most rom-coms.
