A solid, somewhat uneven, 1972 Charles Bronson action movie directed by Michael Winner, who also did "Death Wish." Bronson is a quiet, but deadly assassin who takes on an apprentice (future "Airwolf" star Jan-Michael Vincent) and gets into complications. Of a mechanical nature! If you like 70s Bronson, you'll like this. It has its slow parts, but has some good action and a conclusion set in Italy. The title may have been confusing as it sounds more like a car movie. Remade in 2011 with Jason Statham and Ben Foster.

Good Charles Bronson flic- much, much better than the recent remake.

“The Mechanic” was a major picture for tough guy Charles Bronson and it was made just two years before the cult classic, “Death Wish.” The movie portrays the isolation of the life of a professional hitman and indicates that a good hitman must be very studious and skillful if he is to succeed for a long time. This film was very slick and somewhat reminiscent of the Dirty Harry series. This film would be remade in 2012, starring Jason Stathum as the hitman.

As much as I really like Jason Stathum's character in the remake of this classic, no one could have played Bishop better than Charles Bronson...PERIOD! I mean 30 years later (after the remake), & this movie kicks @$$!
