Tokyo teenager Gorgeous is upset with her long-widowed father--he wants to marry his new girlfriend Ryoko. Seriously miffed, Gorgeous hits the road to visit her aunt in the country, bringing along her best girlfriends Sweet, Melody, Fantasy, Prof, Mac, and Kung Fu. The titular house belongs to the wheelchair bound aunt, whose large white cat has been immortalized in artwork throughout. Things soon start to go very badly for the teenagers. While there are pinwheeling body parts, there are also bits of homage to avant-garde cinema, Looney Tunes cartoons, schlock Italian horror, chop-socky martial arts--all in a dreamlike, phantasmagoria of brightly colored Seventies-era kitsch. This is hardly to everyone's tastes, but it is old-school Japanese insanity of the very best kind.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Bizarre Japanese film full of goofy low-budget effects in which cats, pianos, and mattresses are all to be feared.

Cult film full of goofy low-budget effects in which cats, pianos, and mattresses are all to be feared.

The most unhinged, bats-in-the-belfry-surreal cat movie of all time!

Just watch it! The editing alone makes this movie worth a watch

Hausu reminds me of visiting my grandparents' house, but the cat in the movie is nicer.

An odd Japanese horror film, to be sure, but with more ideas, imagination and bravado than most movies in general can even DREAM of. Has some of the most original sequences you'll ever see! A dude turns into bananas at one point! Great stuff!!

The director lost all his childhood friends from the A-bomb so I guess that’s one of the reasons for the gore and terror. I think a lot of Japanese people have found horror films as a way of explaining and unleashing a stifled cultural grief. Every generation does something new to express themselves I guess. The supplements are interesting to watch too.

Loving the one and five star polarized reviews here, haha!

No, this isn't a masterpiece by any stretch, but it's amazing in its insane use of (inadvertent?) Comedy, beauty, and sheer trippiness. Read the back story on it to get a better understanding of why it's so wild n wacky...

Halloween classic!

I don't understand how anyone could rate this movie so highly. I like horror and campy movies, and I really tried to like this movie...but it just did not resonate with me on ANY level. Was it the extremely dated and cheesy special effects? Was it the annoying female characters? The cat? The aunt? What?!

Well, I thought about it and deduced that this film had a lot of potential, and yet it failed to compel me. I found it neither funny nor scary. Where it should have amused me fell flat. I am not talking so much about the special effects but how it made me feel watching it. Yes, I did see the entire movie and I strongly believe that it was missing elements that could have made it better.

I am debating whether I should watch it again. I mean, the beginning, which could have been chucked out or shortened considerably, ran approx 30 minutes before anything happened...and when it happened I was dissapointed. Could this movie warrant a modern remake? Perhaps. I don't care much for modern special effects either. The characters and storyline must be compelling enough!

I brought this for a "bad movie" night with a mixed group of people and we all ended up having a blast because of just how ridiculous it was. Even the people who claimed to hate it couldn't tear themselves away. Where else are you going to see a carnivorous piano?

Pretty bad. Acting story effects a lump of chee-zu. Meant to be "camp". Obviously done by a director of tv commercials--correction, Japanese commercials. Quite annoying. And that awkward moment when the director chooses to get pervy with underage schoolgirls. Stick to old Peter Jackson.

One of the most bonkers movies I have ever seen.

The composition & editing are unique and close to being one-of-a-kind.

The appeal of this film is in the viewing experience. The plot & story are just there to give a narrative thread to loosely tie all the visual insanity together.

This is very much a "love it or hate it" film.

I loved it.

Wow. Not scary. Not coherent. If his daughter actually thought of the idea, we would have been better off if she had directed it. I believe that to make this rot enjoyable, you need to take LSD - the director obviously did. (the only weird thing is that I remember the girls names ; Go Prof!)
