"On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person--but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased ... where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it."-- Provided by publisher.

Modern-day gothic suspense. And I always like a good tarot card reader.

Creepy and twisty with a remote mansion, mysterious housekeeper and lots of secrets to reveal. Ruth Ware's best yet.

I did not enjoy reading "The woman in cabin 10" but decided to give her one more chance and I'm glad I did.

Another good thriller by Ware. I did not think this one was as good as Lying Game but better than Woman in Cabin 10. Unfortunately, for this book, the “mystery” is very easy to solve and I found myself impatient with the protagonist to “catch up”. The whole Tarot card aspect felt like just filler and I skipped over some of that. Still, the resolution of the story was a little more full-bodied as Hal found out not only what happened to her mother but found a family in the process.

Loved the story, but just couldn't adjust to the name 'Hal' for a woman.

Just loved this book, great story telling, interesting characters and twists and turns galore, loved this tale...another good read from Ruth Ware! Excellent! You wont be disappointed when reading her books, also read the Lying Game, that is excellent too!

I know that I am in the minority when I say that this book didn't do it for me. Honestly, I haven't liked anything that Ms. Ware has written and this is the only book by her that I've been able to finish. All I can think of is "meh".

This is a terrific mystery thriller! There are wonderful puzzles and revelations, a creepy mansion with a Mrs. Danvers type housekeeper, sudden realizations, a chase through a dark cellar, the woods, and across a frozen pond. A satisfying page-turner with nice twists.

Family secrets? check. Atmospheric? check. Looking for a suspense and mystery? check. check.

A compelling read set in Cornwall, featuring young Hal (Harriet), who has recieved a mysterious letter about a large inheritance. She travels to Trepassen, a crumbling estate in Cornwall, and attends the deceased's funeral. While there, she realizes that something is very very wrong.

This is by far my favourite of Ruth Ware's novels. It reads as a modern Gothic tale with dual narratives told throughout. Fans of Daphne du Maurier, Kate Morton and Sarah Maine are sure to enjoy this novel.

Excellent mystery set in Cornwell and sometime in Brighton UK

Really a quick read

Not till the last few pages do you know the full story.
