The eight season moves into the 1970s, with DCI George Gently facing retirement. In the opening episode Gently discovers the victim's wife was convicted of the murder eight years ago, he decides to re-open the case; a controversial move. But DI Bacchus opposes Gently's decision, not least because he worked as a DS on the original investigation and putting mentor and protégé at complete odds.

Loved George Gently, and his younger sidekick. Great mysteries well acted and in lovely areas of England. Set in the 60's, my era, it dealt with lots of issues, mainly murder, but he also had his way of dealing with the younger cop who was waiting for his chance to be in charge. The introduction of the girl cop was a good addition, she had to be the referee as the younger male questions the older more experienced George, guess who wins ha ha. George rocks and I'm sorry to see it's over.

5 stars from me also. This is for sure my favorite of this genre. I don't mean just this one. All 8 series were excellent. Great stories and great acting.

Surely one of the best TV crime series ever made? The acting (Shaw, Ingleby, et al.) is superb. The authenticity of the settings and costumes, equally so. The final two episodes in the 8-part series, made over 10 years, between 2007 and 2017, are as good as any of the preceding ones. The final scene is harrowing. Without becoming victim of the Conspiracy Theory genre, the series does depict corruption and deceit in high places. If they had made more episodes, I would definitely have watched them!

I love Martin Shaw and this series. I enjoyed the 60's setting. It is bittersweet to see the show end, but since he is in his 70's I guess it was time.

Solid watch as all the previous series with Martin Shaw at his stoic best have been. The first episode is better than the second. True to its time when the roles of women in society were finally changing. It's also fun to see all the old British autos including Ford Anglias, Vauxhalls, and of course, Gently's famous Rover 2000!

I strongly suggest that you watch this series from number one and not see number eight until the end as it is the finale!
We liked it really well and as we had not seen any episodes before, we have now started from the beginning.
There is a lot of character development, especially in his relationship with Bacchus. It would have enhanced the finale even more.

A classy series...loved the 60s time period. Alas, all things must end. I hated to see the series end, but much like the Gently character (and Martin Shaw comments on in the bonus features) realizes in the final episode--it was time to wrap things up.
The final two episodes were very good: first-rate scripts and excellent acting. Goodbye, George Gently, and well done!

As mentioned before the Brits have some very good writers and actors.
I will really miss this series, wish there was more.

Great ending to a great series. I like how they didn't attempt to tie things up in a nice little bow. Good job, writers!!
