Based on a true story, the movie chronicles the incredible journey of a group of enslaved Africans who overtake their captor's ship and attempt to return to their beloved homeland. When the ship, La Amistad, is seized, these captives are brought to the United States where they are charged with murder and await their fate in prison. A battle ensues that captures the attention of the entire nation, confronting the very foundation of the American justice system. But for the men and women on trial, it is simply a fight for the basic right of all mankind ... freedom.

From Library Staff

A group of Africans are illegally purchased by a Spanish slaver, but the slaves escape, murder much of the crew, and demand the survivors sail them back to Africa. Instead, the ship is captured off of the American coast. This leads to a difficult choice about what to do with the slaves: are they ... Read More »

A true story of courage in the face of incredible odds. Morgan Freeman,
Matthew McConaughey, Anthony Hopkins and newcomer, Djimon Hounsou star in this amazing telling of a story that certainly deserves a place in our history books. Great acting and good story telling.

A fine fairly accurate historical account of a slave ship with Slaves from Africa arriving in the NE states in 1839 and the court room drama that follows. a SPEILBERG movie. Well acted & filmed. Highly recommended for teenagers and older to watch so they know and understand what occurred during American slave times.

This movie has John Q Adams being reluctant to help but history does not portray him as being reluctant. I just took a tour of the capitol in D.C. and walked where his desk was the guide portrayed Adams and a champion of the abolish cause and past his views on the Abraham Lincoln who sat behind him several rows back. Much nudity and cruelty shown in this movie. It is not for young children.

an efficient, if not great, retelling of an important historical event, worth it for its brilliant performances from, especially, Antony Hopkins, and Matthew McConaughey, and for its last illuminating 30 minutes

A historical perspective of slavery that offers a glimpse of justice & equality, but is offset by all the real world lynchings over the next century & neo-slavery of the prison population. In the Heat of the Night & Mississippi Burning are recommended viewing.

Special features interesting. Had it not been for "dashboard" I would not have know about this true story. A bit long, but good history lesson.

One of Anthony Hopkins better roles, Matthew's also, and a very good history lesson for all Americans. This movie is as good as Schindler's List, imo, but didn't get the recognition it deserved. Got good press but not from the critics.

I'm sorry I waited 20 years to watch this film. It's a vivid re-creation of a chilling and important chapter in American history, one I knew too little about. I'll leave criticism of the historical treatment to people who know more. I particularly enjoyed watching Anthony Hopkins play crusty old John Quincy Adams, a placeholder in my sketchy historical ledger. And of particular interest--right now in Minneapolis--is the role played in this story by Sen. John C. Calhoun, for whom our central Lake is named. Calhoun, a staunch supporter of slavery, is portrayed in a harsh light. Just on the basis of this history, I say: change the name of Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska.
