Retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

The ending is honestly what made the book for me. Before the last few chapters, I felt like the plot lacked something and the romance wasn't exactly hitting the mark. However at the end with the plot twist and character development it took me completely by surprise. I didn't love Cath's character at the beginning, and felt like she was a weak mc, but it all adds up with the ending and it will truly break your heart.

Heartless is yet another great fantasy book by Marissa Meyer. It was written as a prequel to Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, showing how the Queen of Hearts came to be. This book is an intricately written story filled with love, heartbreak, and food. The main character, Catherine, has a lot of social pressure on her as she is told to be someone she is not. All Catherine wants to do is open a bakery with her best friend, Mary Ann, but she is expected to marry the king and assume the position of being queen. However, she encounters an intriguing man one day and falls for him. How far will the two go to stay together and hide their relationship? I encourage readers 13 and up to read this tale full of twists and turns to find out what happens next. I guarantee that the well-developed plot and characters will not disappoint.

Heartless, by Marissa Meyer
In the whimsical land of Hearts, all Catherine wants to do is open a bakery with her best friend Mary Ann, who is also her maid. However, as the only daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness and heir to Rock Turtle Cove, her dreams are unthinkable for someone of her social standing. Her parents, the Marquess and Marchioness have big visions for Cath’s future, none of which involves a bakery, and specifically of the King proposing to Cath, making her the Queen of Hearts. But this is the opposite of what Cath wants; despite her mother’s consistent nagging of putting herself before the King, Cath doesn’t want to marry the king or wear the crown. When she meets Jest, the court joker, the mysterious, charming, and witty court joker fills her every thought and she feels attraction towards him, unlike for the King. Her parents would never allow her relationship with the court joker and the King cares for her, but Jest has her heart. Choosing between her heart and not disappointing her parents tears her. Through a series of adventures and letting fate take its course, we learn the story of how the Red Queen of Hearts became so heartless.
This story was absolutely exceptional and heart clenching! I loved how Marissa Meyer told the story of the Queen of Hearts, the time before Alice in Wonderland. Emotions in the book were so intense and I could really feel the constant distress Cath endured having to fight her feelings for Jest, but always failing. She wanted to give everything up for him and have a bakery, but her parents only cared about social standing. They never cared about her happiness and that's what infuriates me the most. The ending really spun the whole story around, but I should’ve known. The Red Queen of Hearts wasn’t meant to have a fairytale ending, as we know from the story, Alice in Wonderland. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy/fairytale and romance.

This is a story about a girl named Catherine. She is one of the most known and loved girls in all of wonderland and her mother wants her to marry the unmarried king so she could become a queen but her interests lie elsewhere, she was a talented baker and wanted to open a shop of her own. Catherine is expecting the king to propose to her but she meets a mysterious, charming gentleman named Jest. She wishes to follow her own destiny but her fate has other plans.

This book was very good, however the ending was a cliffhanger. If you are not really interested in cliffhangers then this book might not be for you. Otherwise I find that the book was very descriptive and fun to read. If you enjoy detail and long reads then you will love this book, it made my reading experience a lot better. It is a fairly long story, so I would not recommend this for people with very little time on their hands. I really enjoyed this book and do believe that you should try reading it because you wouldn't regret it.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a Queen of Hearts origin story. It tells the story of Caroline, a girl who lives in the world of Alice in Wonderland. There are several references to the original Alice in Wonderland, and heartbreak, loss, and adventure, eventually lead to her becoming the infamous Queen of Hearts. I really liked this book. It was super interesting, although it was also heart wrenching at times. It was a really cool backstory and I like the author’s interpretation of the Queen of Hearts’ origin.

Another gem by Marissa Meyer! See the dark decent of the girl who becomes the Wonderland Queen of Hearts. I LOVED the descriptions (many of them baked goods-related) and that the Joker dresses in “black motley” – which means 3 different colors of black!
