I love that I can relate to the theme of role playing games and mystery. Which is one of my preferred genres and my favorite when done well. (Jackson)

A smuggler's inn is the perfect place to look for secret spaces and other mysteries.

Milo's Christmas holiday plans are up-ended when his adoptive parents' inn receives a slew of unexpected guests. This is a really fantastic children's mystery for older children and up. Amazing setting! I loved the wondrous Greenglass House. Really intriguing characters. Milo is a great protagonist, and his friend Meddy is a fascinating character. Together they make a great detective team. Greenglass House, which is an inn, ends up full of a group of mysterious and eccentric strangers, all of whom become suspects in the mystery. Why did these diverse strangers suddenly appear at the inn in the dead of winter? What are they looking for? The mystery is a lot of fun, full of twists and turns. Milo and Meddy actively investigate and keep finding clues and piecing information together. The book is the perfect balance between a spooky story, a twisty mystery and fun characters. Highly recommended.

Another lovely story from Kate Milford. I enjoyed The Left Handed Fate so much a few weeks ago, that I decided to start this one. Imagine my delight when I realized the two stories have some things in common- setting and distant relations between some of the characters. I can't wait to read more! I would most likely hand this to middle-grade readers who like mystery, magic, and role-playing games.

"This book is a great mystery novel and involves lots of teamwork. This is a great read for people who like mysteries and who also don't get too scared. This book is similar to Stuart Gibbs 'Fun Jungle' series -- which I also love. I encourage you to read it (or at least try it)."

I loved the suspense and the mystery of the book towards the end, but I was dissapointed that that wasn't included in the start. All together great read.

This was a really good book that contains mystery and suspense, the only thing I did not like about it was that I felt it was a little slow in the beginning.

This was a unique read. The whole time I was reading, I was wondering if it was fantasy or a sort of an alternate reality with a slightly exaggerated concept of what is feasible.

And then...

And THEN...

And then I hit the plot twist in chapter 12. Oh, my goodness. It absolutely blindsided me, and yet the author totally played fair - if you looked at all the preceding writing, it made total sense in context, and you could even see subtle hints it was coming. But I have to declare it an example of masterful writing.

Though I personally have never minded spoilers (life is too short to get hung up on things like that), I will not spoil it beyond that and I urge you not to spoil it for yourself either. The "Wait, WHAT?!" moment will be well worth it. The story leading up to it is certainly intriguing and entertaining enough to hold your interest, too, and though it's not the focus, Milo's feelings about his adoption add an undercurrent of emotional depth beneath the main plotline. Highly recommended.

My favorite children's novel of 2014. Unique characters, friendships, unexpected twists, set in an old house during a snowstorm. Cozy, mysterious, and gentle, I was hoping that all would end well for everyone involved.
