Mae wanted to be an astronaut. She dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering. Her parents encouraged her, saying, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible." This encouragement, along with Mae's own curiosity, intelligence, and determination, paved the way for her to become the first African American woman to travel in space.-- Adapted from publisher's description.

Based on the life of Mae Carol Jemison, this picture book is a great read to illustrate how you can be anything you set your mind to -- together with hard work, of course. I like how Mae didn't let her teacher's comment get her down, and how she talked out her disappointment with her parents. Reach for the moon and you will find the stars.

This book is just fantastic. Simple clear text and gentle illustrations following the evolution of a dream.

A great book! My 3- and 4-year-olds loved it and now have added "being an astronaut" to the long list of things they aspire to be! Nice non-fiction story that moves along well. Good story.
