The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man in the old west. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love with a runaway slave and had his child. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track the killer. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver for Wells Fargo. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first known woman to vote in America in 1868 (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

This wide ranging historical novel, based on a true story, is a page-turner for the most part. It runs the gamut from the baby girl left on the doorstep of the poorhouse to her being taken under the wing of a slightly older boy. He turns against her when he grows up into a bully and she's taken under the wing of the black stable hand and learns to love and handle horses. She refuses to run away with him, and she thinks she'll never see him again. Later, Charlotte Parkhurst creates a family, who are killed, and she runs to California dressed as a man, to seek her revenge. She becomes Charley Parkhurst, a famous whip, a stagecoach driver, whose whip is the symbol of his mastery of his horses. Eventually she kills a notorious outlaw, falls in love, and in her old age finds peace living with another woman. This first novel is well written, and pulls the reader in to its time and place. Highly recommended.
