'First published in Kenya in 2014 to critical and popular acclaim, Kintu is a modern classic, a multilayered narrative that reimagines the history of Uganda through the cursed bloodline of the Kintu clan. Divided into six sections, the novel begins in 1750, when Kintu Kidda sets out for the capital to pledge allegiance to the new leader of the Buganda Kingdom. Along the way, he unleashes a curse that will plague his family for generations. In an ambitious tale of a clan and a nation, Makumbi weaves together the stories of Kintu's descendants as they seek to break from the burden of their shared past and reconcile the inheritance of tradition and the modern world that is their future."--Back cover.

This novel is a multigenerational saga of an Ugandan clan. Part I is set in the mid-18th century and reveals the origin of the curse that continues for generations. The other five parts are set in the early 21st century and are about Kintu's descendants. The manifestation of the curse as mental illness is not credible. The book is too long given the similarities of narratives. Disappointing.

One of those origin of a country stories (in this case, Uganda), in this case using a fictional family to tell how an age old curse has to be destroyed. The book is also a clarion call for democracy in the country after years of dictatorship.

It's hard to keep track of the character's because the names are unfamiliar but it is compelling story and hard to put down -- a curse through generations of twins that are scattered through time, geography and politics. I was very attached to each one of them.
