"Abirached was born in Lebanon in 1981. She grew up in Beirut as fighting between Christians and Muslims divided the city streets. Follow her past cars riddled with bullet holes, into taxi cabs that travel where buses refuse to go, and on outings to collect shrapnel from the sidewalk. With striking black-and-white artwork, Abirached recalls the details of ordinary life inside a war zone"-- from publisher's web site.

This book is a light hearted and slightly humorous graphic novel on the very real issue of escaping war. I recommend it.

The art may remind you of Persepolis but we're in Lebanon during the Lebanese Civil War instead and the story is much more fragmented. It's a series of "I remember" or "I don't remember" statements and anecdotes about the author's life in Beirut during the time. It's a smooth story but at the same time perhaps doesn't have the sort of impact I was expecting. There are moments - like the volume of the father's music and the bullet ridden family car - but overall it feels a lot more like someone just telling you bits of a story instead of the whole thing.

A companion to Abirached's earlier "A Game for Swallows." Has a simple, hypnotic rhythm. Perhaps a good addition to middle school book clubs.
