A very special book! Not many people can create; even less can talk about their creating. The creative process talked about here is so personal and intimate it’s like we’re privy to a man’s therapy sessions. Philip Guston exhibits his perceptions of his ‘being’ as he paints, as he changes from painting and from seeing his painting change throughout. This talking is so original and is expressed so in it’s essence it seems alive. It probably changes with each reading, like channelled material. Only exact quotes from many panels, interviews, and forums back in the ’50’s ‘60s. You wouldn’t want any ‘journalist’ interpreting this. To be honest, I don’t know if any painting other than realism is of any value at all; I’m a philosopher and I just create. The ‘Art Market’ isn’t anything to do with objets d’art, let alone with creativity. We’re on our own with this material, the only way to travel. If you don’t like/can’t think abstractly or conceptually don’t touch this one. A little goes a long way. This is a bedside book to own. Sit in with Philip Guston and feel like you’re in a salon in Montmartre.
