Someone once wrote that this book is “Just right for a pretentious teenager.” Which is exactly what I was when I read it. I was on the make for more Pynchon and Gaddis than either of them had a hankerin’ to write and Barth, for the most part, filled the bill, in his own special way of course. The energy from this propelled me through several other Barth novels of which only “Giles Goat Boy” comes to mind. (I have to wonder if Jim Brewer was also a “pretentious teenager”…)
