5/5 Cinder by Marissa Meyer is a refreshing combination of fairy tales and science fiction, incorporating the best of both genres. The story mirrors many aspects of Cinderella, creating both nostalgia and suspense in the reader for what will happen next. The story is set in a futuristic world, where humans and androids coexist. Cinder, a 16 year old mechanic, is the protagonist in the story. She is different from most in her city; not quite human, not quite android. Cinder is a cyborg. She lives in New Beijing, where an incurable plague is overtaking the population. It all begins when she gets an unexpected visitor at her repair shop, and she is forced to see her world in a new light. All the while, the manipulative Lunar people watch from space, waging their war against the world in the ultimate goal of bringing it to its knees. To prevent this from happening, Cinder must uncover the secrets of her past to save her future. Throughout the story, the writer introduces you to fun characters you will fall in love with and unique places you will want to visit. A very suspenseful and action-packed read, the Lunar Chronicles’ first installment is a novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author masterfully sets Cinder up to play a larger role in the Lunar war. I recommend this book for those who enjoy sci-fi, action, and adventure. For my overall reading experience, I rate this story 5/5 stars.
