This book is an absolute treasure. I absolutely loved the novel and found myself connecting to the characters and feeling their emotions as the story progressed. Set in Germany 1939 -1943, The Book Thief tells the story of a young girl named Liesel, narrated by Death who has in his possession a book that she had written that was about these years. Liesel starts to randomly steal books, and later more methodically, but she is never greedy. This book was expertly written and was the first book I read in awhile that told the reader what happens at the end of the story. This book in an absolute masterpiece and had made me cry multiple times because of the sheer emotion present. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone interested in these types of novels. However, I would not recommend this novel to younger ages as there are some dark themes in the novel. Rating – 5/5. @Average_Bookworm of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board This historical fiction, young adult fiction novel follows the life of a young German girl as tragedies are thrown at her, narrated by none other than Death himself. Liesel Merminger the girl has her world fall apart when her family is left behind, with her new foster parents she must cope in Nazi Germany. Death is surprisingly sympathetic towards the souls he delivers to the afterlife. This book is full of plot twists and surprises, Markus Zusak has incredible character building arcs making his work all the more sublime. Personally, I would recommend this book and his other novels to other avid readers because of the sheer uniqueness of it. - @Florence of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
