I liked this slightly more the second time around, but the central problem remains the same: Warren Beatty's lead performance. He's such a complete nonentity, no so much an idiot but rather a Frankenstein's monster. He hobbles around the movie acting as if even the most basic human interactions are unfathomable and baffling. The rest of the supporting cast tries to save it, and between Julie Christie's glam sauciness, Goldie Hawn's carping innocence, Lee Grant's desperate iciness, and Jack Warden's sleazy truthfulness they nearly pull it off. All four performances vacillate between hilarious and humanizing moments, but when they are in relation to Beatty it always feels slight half-hearted. With Beatty in the lead, most scenes of this film are dull as hell, it would all work better if he was an offscreen character the three central ladies fought over. Yawn.
