In this romance-mystery by Megan Miranda, high school junior Mallory has been convicted of murdering her ex-boyfriend Brian, and now she has to live with the grief of his loss and the constant feeling that his soul is watching her, trying to harm her for what she did. On top of that, Brian’s mother isn’t too happy with her either, and is out to get revenge for her son. The problem is, Mallory didn’t mean to kill him in the first place. In this fast-paced novel, Mallory has to deal with the hardships of growing up and trying to live on her own. Ever since Brian’s death, her parents have been distant, as if they’re afraid of her, and even has to go through with being shipped off to boarding school. There, everyone knows of her past and keeps their distance in fear, leaving Mallory alone and friendless. However, she meets several people from her past that know the real her, and know that she would never mean to kill someone. Mallory questions if boarding school will really be a new start for her like her parents’ said, until she finds out that someone is trying to get her. She would wake up in the morning with hand marks on her shoulders and blood on her hands, and see Brian around the campus or at her window at night. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, both for the writing style and storyline. Megan Miranda (as I’ve read her work before) is one of my favourite writers because she brings the reader right into the story as if they were the character themselves. The plot of the story reminded me a bit of the movie ‘The House at the End of the Street’ for its terrors and plot twists, but is was still refreshingly unique. This book deals heavily with the theme of Mallory finding the truth behind herself and what really happened the night she apparently murdered Brian, digging deep within her mind to fight away the madness that is creeping up on her. It also deals greatly with friendship, and show Mallory’s best friend Colleen has been with her every step of her life as support. There wasn’t anything I would have changed about this book. It keeps you in suspense until the very end, so there’s no way you can put the book down. In fact, I read the whole thing in one sitting! As I have read both of the books that Megan Miranda has written and LOVED them just as much, I will definitely be looking forward to her next release.
