This is not meant to be a documentary of occupied France. In places it was a little like a soap opera, but I enjoyed keeping track of who was sleeping with whom. Each episode ended with a cliffhanger to be resolved. I study a lot of WWII history. This a very entertaining, intricate story that illustrates a bitter period of time for France without simply being a series of facts. It focuses on a number of characters both French citizens / resistance, German soldiers, Nazi SS / SD, and French collaborators. There are 5 sets of 12 episodes, one for each year of the German occupation of France, 1940-1944. The series is in French with subtitles. I became very engrossed in several characters, both good and evil, and really wanted to know their fates. Not really a spoiler, but one of my favorite characters is killed. Several other individuals sort of disappear into an unknown future and several strong story lines were simply dropped. ****** SPOILER ALERT *** I did not like that the French resistance forces were portrayed as worse than the Germans in many cases in the last episodes. There were, I am certain, abuses by the resistance toward Germans and collaborators after liberation, but to have abusive Frenchmen be the "stars" of the last episodes was very disappointing to me. I still recommend the series even though I enjoyed only 56 of the 60 episodes. Kristi & Abby Tabby
