Nothing spectacular here, but there's rarely anything wrong with the silly colourful fun of a family film. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA provides just that. A sweet film about a widowed father who finds it hard not to helicopter parent his daughter Mavis, the film adds a nice layer of laughs with its spooky cast of characters. First of all, the father we focus on is Dracula. Then there's his friends, such as Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy. In fact, the Invisible Man is absolutely my favourite, dealing in jokes that invoke our lack of knowledge regarding his physical appearance almost exclusively but sporadically and creatively enough that it compensates for the overall one-note spirit. It's flawed and doesn't stand up to some of the great animated films, especially the Pixar œuvre, but it's a good time nonetheless. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
