This is an intense read, full of dread and beauty. I felt I finally understood something about being Black in America, something that was invisible to me before, in spite of my reading, and something tenuous, that might slip away again. That's the magic trick of this book, that allows us inside the intimacies of other people's lives and uses such gorgeous language to describe a wretched state of dis-ease.
