This is a beautifully written, well-researched novel about a historical expedition into the Alaskan interior in the 1880's, and it's also about a marriage. It's thoughtful and shot through with magical realism right out of Alaskan native folklore.

A childless couple working a homestead in 1920 Alaska discover a little girl living in the wilderness, with a red fox as a companion, and begin to love the strange, almost-supernatural child as their own. I loved the information about the Alaskan farm and wilderness as much as the magical elements in this beautifully written story. Also available in ebook.

This epic tale of Vikings is filled with treasure, not all of it the time that comes in battered wooden chests. Expect lots of killing and pillaging and wit.

A young woman in 1829 Iceland is sentenced to death for murder, but the execution can't happen until spring, and there is no prison, so she is housed in the home of a farmer and his family. In the close quarters of an Icelandic farm, the family and the purported murderess begin to know each other. What really happened the night of the murder? The writing is quite spare and lovely, and by the end, you really want to know what happened. This is also on ebook and in large print.

The residents of a California commune in 1970 decide to move to Alaska and live off the land there. Some of its members have an agenda that has little to do with peace and love. It's interesting to watch them interact with the serious homesteaders who are living in the remote area where they wind up. I love a lot of TC Boyle's books, but this one is my favorite. This is also available on ebook.

This is a great book about survival (and the failure to survive) on the ice after an expedition to the Arctic runs into terrible trouble. It's good on so many levels-- lots of good characters, something creepy out on the ice stalking the crewmen, and there are a ton of interesting facts-- about Arctic ice, early problems with canned food, mid-19th century shipbuilding, Inuit lore, and more. It will also make you very grateful you will probably never suffer from scurvy. Also available on ebook and audiobook CD.

In 1871, 19 members of the crew of the ship Polaris were cast adrift on the ice off the coast of Greenland. This novel retells the event, and it's fascinating to watch how they survive and what happens between the different survivors.

This book is a teensy bit hard to love at first. It's over 600 pages long. It's told in the somewhat impenetrable style of the Icelandic sagas. There are a bazillion characters, and most of the men have names that start with Thor-. And also, it's the story of a disaster. For hundreds of years, Vikings lived in Greenland, and then in the 14th Century, they disappeared, and no one really knows exactly what happened. This novel imagines that dying out. By the end, I cared very much about the characters and felt completely absorbed in the cycle of the years and how they survived. This is also available in ebook.
